On June 16, 2006 my oldest daughter Jenny got married.  It was the happiest day in her life and one of the happiest in my life too.  While at Jenny’s reception party, one of her bridesmaids and I sat down outside to get a rest from dancing and a breath of fresh air.  I had previously coached softball and this bridesmaid and Jenny were both on my team so I had a good relationship with her.  It was then that she told me how jealous she was of my daughter because Jenny had such great parents, brothers and sisters.  She envied our family and how close we were and how honest and sharing we were with each other.  I was so proud that I started to tear up.

What I knew then is what I know now and have always known.  Camping in a family tents strengthens the family.  I grew up in a family of 7 and we camped a lot.  My own family with three kids also camped a lot.  We’ve always done a lot of things together.  We talked around the campfire, shared stories, sang songs, played games, ate together, slept in the same tent , fished together and so on.  The family bonds that formed during those outings are not replaceable.  Now my daughter takes her children on camping trips and my wife and I sometimes go along with them.
